World Rallycross returns to Finland, and can be followed live on TV

The FIA World Rallycross Championship will return to Finland this August after a six-year break. The event, organised by SET Promotion Oy, will take place at the Kouvola Circuit, offering a great challenge to the best rallycross drivers in the world. The high-profile event, which will take place on the last weekend in August (29-30), will be broadcast live via Yle channels to all motor sport fans. The event has been made possible by a partnership with CapitalBox, and will be known as the CapitalBox World Rallycross of Finland.
The exceptional circumstances of 2020 have affected motor sport calendars all over the world. The reorganisation of the World Rallycross Championship calendar has presented Finland with a long-awaited opportunity to return to the series.

I’m delighted that we can add events in Finland. Everything from the initial idea, to getting a contract, has taken just a few weeks and illustrates the best kind of lateral thinking and cooperation from the event organiser, our World RX competitors, the IMG World RX team and the FIA to recognise an opportunity and make the most of it, said Paul Bellamy, Senior Vice President of motorsports events at IMG.

Although the event has come together in an incredibly short time-frame, organiser SET Promotion Oy has planned the high-quality World Championship round while respecting the ongoing global situation.

It's fantastic that Finnish motor sport expertise is so trusted in the world and we have the opportunity to organise an FIA World Rallycross Championship race in Finland this summer. We have been able to create the package on a tight schedule, thanks to the help of professional people and good partners, said SET Promotion’s Event Manager, Sami Puumalainen.

Our main focus is to organise a great event for the competitors, and at the same time to take care of the safety of the participants, with all the necessary restrictions. It’s great to get World Rallycross back to Finland after such a long break. We know that many teams and drivers have good memories of the Kouvola circuit; we will do our best to make this one a great and memorable event too. As a spectacular and fast-paced sport, Rallycross is the best motorsport entertainment, with 600-horsepower, four-wheel drive Supercars fighting door-to-door on track, where not an inch is given away for free. And best of all, we are able to offer this show to all motor sport fans on TV on both race days, Puumalainen continued.

As the exceptional circumstances in 2020 have delayed the start of the World Rallycross Championship season, the event format for the first three weekends includes two separate rounds condensed into two days. Therefore, Finland, which is the second event of the season, will run two completely separate rounds, both of which will be awarded full World Championship points.

The aim of the event is to serve the entire motor sport community as well as possible during these exceptional times. This is highlighted by the investment in television, as every motor sport fan will have the opportunity to watch the race safely via their screens, live on Yle’s channels.

Rallicrossin MM-osakilpailu Suomeen – tapahtuma kaikkien seurattavissa TV:stä livenä

Rallicrossin maailmanmestaruussarja palaa Suomeen kuuden vuoden tauon jälkeen. Tapahtuman järjestää SET Promotion Oy ja tapahtuma-areenana toimii Kouvolan moottorirata, tarjoten mahtavan suorituspaikan maailman parhaille rallicrosstähdille. Elokuun viimeisenä viikonloppuna ajettava huipputapahtuma tarjoillaan Ylen kanavien välityksellä kaikille moottoriurheilun ystäville. Osakilpailun mahdollistaa yhteistyökumppanuus CapitalBoxin kanssa, kilpailun kantaessa nimeä CapitalBox World Rallycross of Finland.
Vallitsevat poikkeusolosuhteet ovat laittaneet moottoriurheilun kilpailukalentereita uuteen uskoon kaikkialla maailmassa. Rallicrossin MM-kalenterin uudelleenjärjestelyiden ansiosta Suomelle avautui kauan odotettu mahdollisuus saada autourheilun supertapahtuma palaamaan Suomeen.

Vaikka ajallisesti kaikki on tapahtunut erittäin nopealla aikataululla, kilpailun järjestävä organisaatio, SET Promotion Oy on suunnitellut korkealaatuisen MM-osakilpailun toteuttamisen vallitsevia olosuhteita kunnioittaen.

Rallicross on näyttävänä ja nopeatempoisena lajina mitä parhainta autourheiluviihdettä, 600-hevosvoimaiset nelivetotykit taistelevat radalla mies miestä vastaan intohimoisesti, eikä tuumaakaan anneta periksi. Ja mikä parasta, pystymme tarjoamaan tämän shown kaikille moottoriurheilun ystäville TV:n kautta molempina kisapäivinä” , Puumalainen jatkaa.

Poikkeusolojen pitkittäessä Rallicrossin MM-kauden 2020 alkua, sisältää kilpailuformaatti kolmen ensimmäisen tapahtuman osalta kaksi erillistä kilpailua tiivistettynä kahteen päivään. Näin ollen Suomessa, joka toimii kauden toisena kisaisäntänä, ajetaan kaksi täysin toisistaan erillistä kilpailua, joista molemmista jaetaan täydet MM-pisteet.

Kilpailun järjestämisessä halutaan palvella koko moottoriurheilukansaa mahdollisimman hyvin myös näinä vallitsevina poikkeusoloaikoina. Tämä näkyy erityisesti panostuksissa televisiointiin, sillä jokaisella moottoriurheilun ystävällä on mahdollisuus seurata kilpailua turvallisesti ruutujen välityksellä, suorina lähetyksinä Ylen kanavilla.

    Rallicrossin MM-sarjan kilpailukalenteri 2020

    RX Academy Sabbatical Statement

RX Academy will take a sabbatical in 2020, but work is ongoing to continue the concept into the future.

Created for the 2017 season by multiple championship winning rallycross team SET Promotion, RX Academy has given aspiring World Champions of the future a platform in which to start their careers, with coaching and tuition in all aspects of becoming a professional driver. A number of RX Academy participants have already progressed up the ladder in the motor sport world.

Having made best use of the RX Academy experience, and the prizes on offer, the three RX Academy Champions so far, Jesse Kallio (2017), Sami-Matti Trogen (2018) and Rasmus Tuominen (2019) will be competing in high level international series this year, in both rallycross and rally, as they progress in their careers.

A study will be undertaken by SET Promotion through 2020 on the future direction of rallycross, as the sport moves towards electrification at the highest level, before defining the possibilities to continue with RX Academy in 2021.

Head of RX Academy: Jussi Pinomäki:

“I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved with RX Academy since we came up with the concept in 2016. We have delivered on our promises and more, and created a unique environment in which there has been a brilliant feeling among everyone in the programme. While I want to thank everyone for their efforts in RX Academy so far, I want to be clear that this is not the end either. We will take a break, but I still feel positive about the future for RX Academy, I strongly believe in the sport of rallycross and that electrification can present new opportunities for drivers at every level. I’m excited to see where the next phase of this journey will take us.”

The identical Renault Clio RS race cars will be used in a five-round Finnish Circuit Racing Championship in 2020 while SET Promotion assesses what direction RX Academy will take in the future.

RX Academy Champion Tuominen to race in Euro RX Super1600 with SET Promotion
RX Academy Champion Rasmus Tuominen will race in the FIA European Rallycross Championship for Super1600 with Finnish team SET Promotion this year.

SET Promotion will return to the Super1600 field with a revised Renault Twingo for the 19-year-old driver, who became the third RX Academy Champion in a final-round showdown in Sweden last year. He will race the Twingo as his prize this season.

Tuominen will follow in the footsteps of FIA World Rallycross Championship stars like Andreas Bakkerud (NOR), Timur Timerzyanov (RUS), Reinis Nitiss (LVA) and Janis Baumanis (LVA) by racing Super1600 machinery with SET Promotion, the Turku-based team having won the front-wheel-drive title no less than six times, including 40 victories and 97 podiums since 2006.

The team, which claimed a trio of victories in the World Rallycross Championship last season operating the GRX Taneco Team, most recently ran the first ever RX Academy Champion Jesse Kallio in Super1600, in 2018, the Finn claiming victory at the Norwegian round in Hell.
Having spent a year out of Super1600 competition, SET will now return with the revised Twingo for the six round campaign in Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Russia, France and Latvia.

Joining Tuominen in the team will be former World Rallycross race winner and GRC Champion Toomas Heikkinen, who will work as driver coach and mentor, as the Finnish team sets its sights on fighting for top honours.

Rasmus Tuominen (FIN), RX Academy Champion and Euro RX Super1600 driver:

“When I was little and started watching rallycross, I remember Andreas Bakkerud winning in Euro RX Super1600 in a Twingo. I’ve watched a lot of onboards since – Super1600 cars are just such special and cool race cars. It’s so good to be making this step with SET.
Coming from front-wheel-drive cars so far in my career, I think Super1600 will be a really good step for me and the driving style will be similar to the Clio RS RX I drove in RX Academy last season. The tyres will be the biggest thing to get used to.
I learned a lot in RX Academy last season about driving in rallycross, handling the pressure when we were fighting for the title in the last round and being as prepared as possible. Hopefully that will help me this year. I think the season will be tough from the start. Of course I want to be on the top step but I know it won’t be easy. I want to be consistent but as the season progresses, I think the speed will come naturally and I hope to get some serious results. I won in Latvia in RX Academy last season so I’m really looking forward to going back there.”

Jussi Pinomäki, SET Promotion Team Principal:

“Although we were very busy with our various different programmes last year, somehow it felt strange that we had no presence in Super1600. It’s a category that is close to all our hearts, where we have had some amazing success, along with some very challenging times too, and we have made some incredible memories with so many of the biggest names in the sport today. I’m very excited that Rasmus will race our revised Twingo this season, our guys have put a big effort into the car over the winter and we can’t wait to get started. Having Topi on board is also really good for the team and for Rasmus. They know how each other operates well from RX Academy last season, which will make a big difference as they go into this new challenge together. Rasmus impressed me with his speed and attitude in RX Academy last season, we’ve already seen what previous champions Jesse Kallio and Sami-Matti Trogen have been able to do in their first European seasons so I’m excited to see what Rasmus can do in the very competitive Super1600 environment.”

Third for Trogen in South Africa amid busy dual-drive weekend
Finnish driver Sami-Matti Trogen, the 2018 RX Academy Champion, completed his prize drive season in the RX2 International Series at Cape Town in South Africa with his and SET Promotion’s second successive podium

It was a busy weekend for the 17-year old, who embarked on not only the season finale of the official FIA World Rallycross Championship support category, but also the sixth round of the iRacing Rallycross World Championship, as points’ leader.

Trogen’s weekend in RX2 got off to a strong start and he placed fourth at the end of the opening day, before climbing from the ‘real-world’ Supercar Lites machine into the simulator to continue his iRX title-challenge with the SET Esports squad.

Thanks to hard to hard work by the Gronholm RX and SET team’s in the Killarney race circuit paddock, a temporary simulator had been built in Africa, and while Trogen was pushed off by another competitor in the iRX final, a good points haul meant he extended his lead in the series.

Returning to RX2 on Sunday, Trogen had a challenging Q3 and Q4, including having the steering broken in first corner contact, and dropped to sixth overall in the Intermediate Classification.

However, a strong drive in the semi-finals ensured a third row start for the final, where he made a good launch, climbed places at the start with fast pace and guided by spotter Joni Wiman on the radio, saved his joker until the final lap and returned to the main circuit third to claim his second podium in a row. He finished the year fifth in the points in the competitive series.

    Also in South Africa:

In the SET Promotion-operated GRX Taneco World Rallycross team, Niclas Gronholm took his second win of the season in South Africa after setting the pace through the event in the team’s Hyundai i20 Supercar. He qualified top in the Intermediate Classification, finished second in semi-final one then led the final round the first lap to take the team’s third win.
Team mate Timur Timerzyanov made it a double podium for the squad in third.

    Sami-Matti Trogen (FIN) #22, RX2:

“Qualifying was quite difficult overall, but I got a good start in the final. I was a little lucky when [Ben-Philip] Gundersson made a mistake, but the last laps were very good and I got third on the last lap out of the joker. Joni was pushing me a lot on the radio and I knew that I had better pace than [Vasiliy] Gryazin, so I was thinking that we would be side-by-side or something out of the joker, but there was maybe more of a gap than I thought in the end. I’m really happy to finish on the podium.

It was quite difficult to do RX2 and iRacing this weekend because I didn’t have so much time to practice in the simulator, but it what was we needed to do. Luckily the iRacing championship contenders didn’t get into the final like I did, so that was good and I extended the championship lead. We have another race already next weekend. I like the track in Sonoma and of course I want to win, but I won’t take too big risks because we have the championship lead and the racing is a bit different in the virtual world.”

Ian Davies, SET Promotion RX2 Crew Chief and spotter:

“Sami-Matti did an amazing job to come from the back row of the grid in the final, on this particular circuit with some great tactics. The last couple of laps in the final were very good. It was just one of those fantastic team days, where the driver and everybody worked together brilliantly. We made some changes between the semi-final and final to the car which I think worked. As a team, and for Sami-Matti as a driver, we never gave up. We have to remember that he’s 17-years old. He had a good event in iRacing on Saturday night to continue leading the World Championship, then we had to refocus on the job today to get to the podium. We’re a small team at SET Promotion, but we have a fantastic driver and I really, really hope that he makes a decision to return to rallycross next year and use the experience that he’s gained.”

Niclas Gronholm (FIN) #68, World RX:

“This feels great! We had a good weekend without any major issues and I have been enjoying it very much. It’s a nice way to wrap up the season like this. Everyone in the team has been working so hard to have the result like this and I am really thankful to all of them. This is a great boost for everyone and I hope we can continue also next year.”

Jussi Pinomäki, SET Promotion Team Principal and GRX Team Manager:

“It was a good weekend overall for Sami-Matti, I’m really pleased with his drive in the finals, he was fast when it really mattered to make it onto the podium. The whole team worked hard to enable him to both RX2 and iRX and the level in both series should not be underestimated, so I he did a very good job and has learned a lot he can use to build on in the future. In GRX, both drivers were hoping for a podium, but were focusing on that target step-by-step to have this wonderful result. This is something to give back to the fans and our partners who have believed in us throughout the last two seasons. Sure, this gives us a good based to build on for next year, but there is a lot of work ahead of us to make sure we can be on the grid in 2020.”
